Guidelines for Volunteers
Notes regarding Children’s Moment:
First, thank you for volunteering your time and energy to our Family of Faith- especially our children! The work that you are doing will be pivotal in the development of the faith lives of these young people!
In order to establish continuity among those of us who participate in Children’s Moment, a list of suggestions and cautions has been compiled. Please note that nothing is REQUIRED of you as a volunteer; however, please take heed of these items and plan to incorporate them into your Children’s Moment planning and action.
SUGGESTIONS
Please do not use inappropriate or “scary” language or topics. These children are bombarded with scariness in the world outside the church doors- let’s try to make their time within church positive, safe, and comforting. Some examples of inappropriateness would be death, destruction- anything which might cause your own children to have nightmares.
Also, please note that the attention span of this age range is VERY short. A good rule of thumb is one minute of attention span for every year of age. For example, some of the children who participate are as young as late 2/ early 3. These children are unable to pay attention much longer than 2-3 minutes. Please try to keep your Children’s Moment to 3-5 minutes.
If you need suggestions for lessons on the text, please contact Naomi. There are several books at the church that provide examples and suggestions for children’s sermons.
Please don’t be afraid to bring objects for lessons. Some children learn best when there is a visible representation of the lesson.
CAUTIONS
Please understand that some children have food allergies. Also, please respect the each parent’s right to have their child abstain from certain foods. Use caution when distributing candy.
If you are distributing an item for the children to take with them as a reminder of the lesson, please be mindful of the number of children present. Always take into account visiting children.
